Is iOS 7 worth losing your jailbreak on 6.1.2?

If you own a jailbroken iDevice, one of the biggest questions on your mind should be whether or not to update to iOS 7? Since Beta 2 is relatively stable, and iOS 6.1.2 is no longer installable, the answer should be obvious. Yes you should? iOS 7 is in fact a very fun, user friendly, completely revolutionary operating system, but in no way replaces the need for a jailbreak. It does however offer many new features, some which a jailbreak was previously needed, that are now built into the operating system! Since jailbreaking eventually will slow down your device, enough to need a clean restore, I do suggest to update to iOS 7 once your device is too slow. But until then keep using your 6.1.2 until for as long as you can! I will note, however, iOS 7 Beta 2 is very fast, stable, and doesn't take away too much battery life, as did the first beta did. In other words it is worth upgrading instead of being stuck on 6.1.4, not jail-broken.

Is iOS 7 worth losing your jailbreak on 6.1.2?

Currently iOS 7 offers many new features, such as Control Center in which a jailbreak was required to use this type of feature. Control Center, as commonly known, allows the user to access quick items such as your flash light, as well as turn on and off system settings such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It also allows you to adjust your brightness. With this feature, as well as notification center, both being able to be accessed on the lock screen, there is no need for jailbreak tools such as “ InteliScreen X,” “Sb-Settings,” or “NCSettings.” There are also other jailbreak tweaks that have been so called “added” into apples operating system. Tools such as Infini-Folders are no longer needed for Apple now allows unlimited applications in one folder as well as pages in folders. Apple has even added small jailbreak tweaks such as “Wee-Roll” which allowed the notification center to “bounce” when hitting the bottom of the screen to their operating system. This was done to improve the “visual experience” of the iOS 7 operating system. On that note, one of the biggest things you notice right when you install iOS 7 is that your background wall paper moves with the detected motion from the accelerometer. This use to be a popular jailbreak tweak called “3D Board.” Lastly if you are still running 6.1.2 and are jail broken, your phone has to be getting laggy by now. It may be worth the update just to check out the new operating system and have a faster phone!

There are however some drastic disadvantages when upgrading to iOS 7 beta. To start off you obviously loose your jailbreak, and cant (at the time) downgrade back to iOS 6.1.2 to “Re-Jailbreak.” This is due to the fact that apple has stopped signing iOS 6.1.2 due to these jail breaking exploits. Furthermore iOS 7 is still in beta development. It is never a good idea to run your personal phone on a beta operating system. (Even though I always find myself doing that.) It can contain many bugs that have not been worked out, such as short battery life, delayed responsiveness, and inaccurate animations. It can furthermore potentially lead to data loss. iOS 7 is no exception. As apple has just released iOS 7 Beta 2, there are a few updates in speed and battery life, however the final version of the operating system is far from finished.

As I stated above, Apple has “Added” their own versions of many popular jailbreak tweaks, but unfortunately have also left a few out. For example, one tweak that was surprisingly left out was “Swipe Selection.” This tweak allows you to use your iOS keyboard to swipe forwards and backwards through what you have already typed. It is currently available on most Androids and other smart phones. Also Apple has not updated their way of replying to messages. iOS 7 still forces you to completely exit the app you are in and open fully open “Messages” to reply to others. Tweaks such as “Quick Reply” or “Bite Sms” are popular among the jailbreak communities, which are unfortunately unavailable without a boot rom or untethered software jailbreak. Finally you will surprisingly miss other tweaks such as MyWi, Barrel, f.Lux, MulticonMover, and open SSH. Theses tools apple would either never allow on their operating system, or just haven’t developed their own version yet.
